Earlier in the year, I wrote an article about how the NFL is in a tough spot with only a couple good teams. As the season has progressed, those good teams have separated themselves in their respective division and leagues. The Cowboys, Patriots, Raiders, Chiefs, and Seahawks have been considered the best teams this year but, it looks like one team is making a surprise appearance and that team is the New York Giants.
In the AFC playoff picture, I will still be shocked if Tom Brady does not get a chance to get his fifth Super Bowl ring but, the NFC is a whole different story. The Cowboys have been a good team but I do not expect them to make the Super Bowl. I expected it would be the Seahawks but after getting their doors blown off by Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers I am not as sure anymore. The Giants have now become one of the favorites to win the NFC in my opinion.
The Patriots are praying that the Giants do not make even close the NRG Stadium in February because, to some extent, they are New England’s kryptonite. The Giants still have to make it through a pretty tough NFC but, with their improved defense and dynamic offense they have a good shot to make the big game.
The Giants defense is probably the biggest reason for their improvement. In his first offseason as head coach, Giants Ben McAdoo went out and signed defensive lineman Damon “Snacks” Harrison and Olivier Vernon. The Giants also acquired Janoris Jenkins for their secondary. Last season, the Giants ranked last in the NFL in yards allowed per game and this season they are 14th. They also have already surpassed their season sack total from last year (23). Their pass rush and improvement in the secondary has led the Giants to a 9-4 record in 2016.
The Giants offense has always been good with the combination of Eli Manning and Odell Beckham Jr. Add in a healthy Victor Cruz and rookie Sterling Shepard, defenses have a tough task on their hand. The Giants offense has actually been worse this year as they rank 27th out of 32 in yards per game but, you can not sleep on their offense. Beckham has been considered a drama queen at times but, there is no denying his ability. With an improvement in the running game the Giants offense could skyrocket up the offensive rankings. Paul Perkins, Rashad Jennings, and returning Shane Vereen all have the ability so it will be interesting to see how they do the rest of the season.
The Giants are legit and teams can not over look them. Eli Manning is a proven playoff winner with a top 5 receiver in Odell Beckham and a good defense, the sky is the limit for the G-Men.
